Bonus abuse and voided winnings: the terms that cost players money

By the CashoutScore testing team · Updated 27 October 2026

Most refused bonus withdrawals do not involve a dispute about the game result. The casino points to a clause in the bonus terms - a bet that was too large, a game that did not count, a second account - and voids the bonus together with everything won while it was active. This guide lists the terms that cause it, how casinos spot the patterns, and how to avoid losing a withdrawal over a rule you did not notice. The arithmetic of wagering itself is in wagering requirements explained.

The terms that bite

Maximum bet while a bonus is active

Bonus terms usually cap the stake per round, or per spin, until wagering is complete. Breaking it once can be enough to void the bonus and winnings, and the check often happens only when you ask to withdraw. Some terms also count bets placed with your own deposit money while the bonus is active.

Excluded games and game weighting

Each game type contributes a percentage of its stake to wagering. Low-edge games - blackjack, baccarat, roulette, some dice or crash games, some high-RTP slots - are often weighted low or excluded. Playing an excluded game can mean the bets do not count, or that the bonus is voided, depending on the wording.

Low-risk betting, hedging and both-sides betting

Bets that generate wagering with almost no risk are commonly prohibited: covering red and black in roulette, betting both sides of a sports market, betting on most of the board, or using a second account to take the opposite position. The terms may describe this as “low-risk”, “irregular” or “hedging” play.

Multiple accounts, households and IP addresses

Bonuses are normally limited to one per person, and often one per household, IP address, device or payment method. Two family members playing from the same home network can trigger this rule even if each has a single account. Check the wording before more than one person in a household signs up.

“Bonus hunting” and discretionary clauses

Many terms contain a broad clause reserving the right to withhold bonuses from players who mainly claim promotions, or whose play the casino considers a pattern of abuse. These clauses are often vague by design. The practical consequence is that a bonus is not a contract you can win on technicalities; the safest reading is the strictest one.

Deposit wagering before withdrawal

This rule applies even without a bonus. As of October 2026, we read in the casinos’ own help pages and terms that Roobet requires crypto deposits to be wagered 100% before withdrawal, Gamdom’s terms (section 4.1) require each deposit to be wagered at least once, and Cloudbet’s terms (section 8.8) require deposits to be wagered in full. Withdrawing an unplayed deposit may therefore be refused or delayed, so check this before depositing.

How casinos detect the patterns

Operators do not publish their methods, but the signals are well known in general terms:

Checks often run at withdrawal time rather than in real time, which is why a breach weeks earlier can surface only when you ask to be paid.

Worked example: what is at stake

A $100 deposit with a $100 bonus, 40x on the bonus only, a 96% RTP slot at 100% contribution, max bet $5. For reference, BitStarz’s bonus terms (read on 2026-10-27) state 40x unless an offer says otherwise; the numbers below are illustrative, not a specific offer.

turnover      = 40 × $100 ÷ 1.00 = $4,000
expected loss = $4,000 × (1 − 0.96) = $160
EV            = $100 − $160 = −$60
ScenarioTurnoverExpected lossEV
96% slot, 100% contribution$4,000$160−$60
99% table game, 10% contribution$40,000$400−$300
Same as row 1, one $10 betbonus and winnings can be voided

At the $5 max bet, $4,000 of turnover takes at least 800 bets. The temptation to finish faster with a few larger bets is exactly what the max bet rule exists to catch: one bet above $5 can cancel everything won so far. Try your own numbers in the wagering calculator, which warns when your bet size is above the max bet you enter.

How to protect yourself

  1. Decline bonuses you do not need. With a negative EV, a bonus mainly adds restrictions. Opt out before depositing; some offers are credited automatically.
  2. Screenshot the terms - general terms and the specific offer - with the date, when you accept. Terms change, and disputes are decided on the version in force.
  3. Write down the max bet, excluded games and deadline and keep every bet under the max, including bets made with your own money while the bonus is active.
  4. Ask support in writing before playing if anything is unclear: whether a game counts, whether your household may each claim, whether you can withdraw your deposit early. Save the reply.
  5. One person, one account, your real location. No VPN, no shared accounts, no betting both sides.
  6. Expect identity checks before a large withdrawal. Cloudbet’s terms, for example, make KYC mandatory from USD 2,200 in cumulative deposits. See KYC vs no-KYC casinos.

FAQ

Can a casino void winnings if I broke a bonus rule by accident?

Usually the terms allow it whether or not the breach was intentional. A single bet above the max bet while a bonus is active is a common example. That is why it pays to read the max bet and excluded games before the first bet, not at withdrawal.

If I decline the bonus, do the bonus rules still apply?

Bonus rules such as max bet and game weighting generally apply only while a bonus is active. Other rules do not depend on bonuses: several casinos require each deposit to be wagered at least once before withdrawal, and identity checks can still be requested.

Is playing bonuses with positive expected value bonus abuse?

Not by itself, but many terms define abuse broadly and leave the judgement to the casino, for example taking only bonuses, playing only low-risk games or switching stake sizes in a pattern. If you are unsure whether a style of play is allowed, ask support in writing before you play and keep the answer.

What should I do if my winnings were voided?

Ask in writing which exact clause was applied and to which bets, and compare it with the terms that were in force when you accepted the bonus. Keep your screenshots and transaction records, and escalate through the casino’s complaint process and its licensing authority if needed.
